1. The Sibling Bond

Siblings share a unique and irreplaceable bond that’s worth capturing. When including your other children in newborn portraits, be open to candid moments that showcase their affection and curiosity. Yes we’ll try for a few photos of big brothers and sisters smiling at the camera, but I’m also all about letting them interact naturally. Whether it’s cuddling with the baby, giving gentle kisses, or simply gazing in wonder, these snaps are always some of my fave!

2. Furry Friends as Family

Pets are an integral part of many families, and they deserve a spot in your newborn portraits too. Since they’re always a bit unpredictable, pets can add a touch of charm and playfulness to the photos. Capture the moment when your pet curiously sniffs the baby or when they curl up together for a nap. These images will not only capture your pet’s loyalty but also the unique love the fur-siblings have for your new addition.

3. Timing is Key

When including siblings and pets in your newborn portraits, timing is everything. Schedule the photoshoot at a time when your older children and pets are well-rested, comfortable and fed (my favorite time is in the morning). This increases the chances of everyone being in good moods which means

4. Prepare and Communicate

Before the photoshoot, prepare your children and pets for the experience. Talk to your kids about the new addition to the family and how they can be a loving big brother or sister. For pets, ensure they are comfortable with basic commands like “sit” or “stay” to help with posing. Having treats or their favorite toys on hand can also keep them engaged and cooperative.

5. Get Comfortable With Unscripted Moments

Some of the most heartwarming photographs are the ones that capture unscripted moments. Yes we’ll try for a few of everyone cheesing at the camera, but also encourage your children and pets to interact naturally. This lets me capture those candid, spontaneous moments that are often so much more meaningful.
