Hi friends, Ben here!
Sarah is all the way out in Arizona this week at a photography workshop, and I am here manning the blog. So get ready for a whole lot more bowties than bows around here the next few days ; )
As many of you know I am just mildly obsessed with movies. I love movies from most every genre and decade, but if you ask me there there are few things better than watching a romantic movie, (especially when you get to share it with the person you love most). There is just something I love so much about getting to cuddle up on the couch with Sarah, a big bowl of homemade popcorn, and a love story . So I thought it might be fun to share a few of my favorite movies that I think all you other couples out there might enjoy snuggling up with on a your next date night in.
1. About Time
This is a sneaky movie. Not only does it deal with romance, it also talks about family love in a way that makes it feel so personal. All of Richard Curtis’ movies are fantastic, but this one is still kinda under the radar in my opinion.
My Favorite Quote: “We’re all traveling through time together, every day of our lives. All we can do is do our best to relish this remarkable ride.”
2. Harold and Maude
The soundtrack will make you smile from ear to ear and the unusual love story is just heartwarming. It’s about a love that spans differences and age, and will have you laughing the whole time.
My Favorite Quote: “The earth is my body; my head is in the stars.”
3. The Notebook
This is “our” movie. We have seen this over 35 times together, and every time we do it makes me try to be a better man. Guys, we got to admit we kinda dig this movie. Ladies, well, you already know about this one.
My Favorite Quote: “That’s my sweetheart in there. Wherever she is, that’s where my home is.”
4. Amelie
One of my favorite foreign films just happens to be a really great, quirky love story. Imagine the romance of Paris meets a young girls imagination and you have this film. Beautiful and so full of great characters. You will smile the whole entire time. Promise.
My Favorite Quote: “So, my little Amélie, you don’t have bones of glass. You can take life’s knocks. If you let this chance pass, eventually, your heart will become dry and brittle. So, go get him, for pete’s sake!”
5.Up
The first seven minutes gets me EVERY. TIME. A love like Carl and Ellie is something I searched for and finally found. This movie is always in everything we do knowing that Adventure is OUT THERE!
My Favorite Quote: “You don’t talk much… I like you!”
6. Brief Encounter
Let’s take it old school with a little black and white. This movie is all about infidelity (which I know is weird to put on a list of romantic movies) but it isn’t filmed in a way that you are left with a sour taste in your mouth. It reminds you to make certain that you are giving your all in your relationship, and the love between the two of them is sure to make your heart have some feels.
My Favorite Quote: ”I love you, Laura. I shall love you always until the end of my life. I can’t look at you now cause I know something. I know that this is the beginning of the end. Not the end of my loving you but the end of our being together. But not quite yet, darling. Please. Not quite yet.”
7. Going the Distance
This is a REALLY funny film that I think a lot of people overlooked. It is vulgar (like, Rated R for a reason vulgar) but don’t we all kinda know people like these? If you need a laugh, this will get you belly laughing and at the center is a totally realistic look at what relationships ACTUALLY look like.
My Favorite Quote: “If you’re so worried about your appearance, are you gonna do something about your veiny, white skin? Because right now you look like an actor in a kabuki troupe.”
8. Benny & Joon
Remember Johnny Depp before he was a pirate? In Benny & Joon he channels one of the best silent actors of all time, Buster Keaton, and it is perfect. This is an obscure 90’s classic about a mentally challenged girl who falls for the town’s black sheep. It is such a good story, and Depp was on his A game in this one!
My Favorite Quote: “You know, it seems to me that, I mean, except for being a little mentally ill, she’s pretty normal.”
9. (500) Days of Summer
This is probably the most romantic anti-romantic comedy I have ever seen. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (or JGL as he is known around our house) is just fantastic in this. Zooey Deschanel does her usual thing, but the chemistry is 100%! I could watch these two fall for each other over and over again.
My Favorite Quote:”Do you think love exists? It’s love. It’s not Santa Claus.”
10. Garden State
This will make you feel like you are not alone in the world because there are people who act and think just like you. Getting older is never fun, but it is always nice to have people to share our experience with. This movie has everything including a soundtrack that is perfect for car rides! Our cd has made it’s way into every car we have ever had, and is one of our favorites!
My Favorite Quote: “I gotta go… you changed my life in four days. This is the beginning of something really big. But right now, I gotta go.”
So that’s it! If you have any favorites we didn’t share here, let us know! We’d love to hear what movies you think we should check out for our next date night in!
Love + Laughs,
Ben
As Good As It Gets gets me every time.
“You make me want to be a better man.”
“If you stare at someone long enough, you discover their humanity.”
But Moonstruck is our movie.
“I’m in love with you.” / “Snap out of it!”
“Do you love him?” / “No.” / “Good, because when you love them they drive you crazy.”
And one of my favorite speeches:
“Not like they told you love is, and I didn’t know this either, but love don’t make things nice – it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren’t here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die. The storybooks are bullshit. Now I want you to come upstairs with me and get in my bed!”
